Art Explore presents Inward, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Harpreet Narula,
opening on 3rd August 2026. The exhibition presents a body of work shaped by three
enduring traditions. The painted walls of Rajasthan and Punjab. The structural
language of the loom. The meditative act of repetition. Together they form an abstract
practice rooted in memory, material and place.
Trained in textile and garment design, Narula builds his paintings with the patience of
the loom. Every mark is placed deliberately. Repetition becomes structure. Structure
becomes image. His canvases accumulate slowly, allowing colour, rhythm and texture
to emerge through sustained acts of making.
The visual language of Inward grows from the fresco traditions of Shekhawati and
Punjab, where natural pigments once covered the walls of havelis and kothis with
stories drawn from mythology, everyday life, flora and fauna. These painted walls
remain a lasting influence on Narula’s practice. Their layered surfaces, weathered
textures and quiet endurance continue through his contemporary abstract paintings.
As interest grows in artists whose practices are shaped by regional histories and
traditional knowledge, Narula offers an abstraction grounded in place, craft and cultural
memory. His paintings honour generations of craftsmanship while opening new
possibilities for contemporary painting. They invite viewers to slow down, look closely
and discover the richness that emerges through time, patience and attention.
Inward brings together paintings that carry the visual memory of vernacular
architecture, textile practice and fresco traditions into a contemporary language of
abstraction. It is an exhibition about patience, material and the enduring relationship
between place and making.
